The present Synagogue is the product of a merger (11 May 1997) between two long established communities. With the exodus of Jews from the East End of London over several generations, many moving in an easterly direction, the Settlement Synagogue, merged with South West Essex Reform Synagogue (SWERS) an obvious partner for merger, many of its own members having their roots in the Settlement or the associated clubs. Since merger there has been a gradual melding of the communities.
Both Synagogues had a fascinating history before merger and through this page you can explore both and then meet up for a virtual tour of the current synagogue building.
